Many people are confused when it comes to determining the right size storage units that can accommodate everything they want to store away. Renting a self-storage unit is a good idea, but what size should you get?
Top Mistakes When Looking for the Right Sized Storage Units:
The mistake we see many people making is either going for a space that’s too small if they are budget minded or one that’s too big if they just want to fit everything comfortably with a bit of future proofing. Either approach isn’t exactly the best, and so you should put a little more effort into calculating what will work best.
Obviously, if the unit is too small, you will not be able to fit everything in there. Though you can always upgrade but moving stuff from one storage unit to the next isn’t exactly easy. So, you’ll want to get the right size storage units from the get-go. Similarly, if the unit is too big, you’re wasting money though you have room to add more stuff in there.
A mistake we’ve seen some people make is showing up to the storage facility with the stuff they want to store and then renting a unit. This approach means that you may not always end up with a unit of the right size. So, the right approach is to do your research, which isn’t very time consuming but worth every minute you spend. Many companies use a storage unit calculator which should help you get an approximate size for the stuff you want to store.
Which Size Storage Units Work Best?
Generally, there are several sizes from which you can choose. You have the 25 sq. ft storage space, on the low end of the spectrum which then goes up to 50 sq. ft storage unit, 100 sq. ft storage units, and gradually to 300 sq. ft units. Now we know for most people these figures are hard to quantify so one way of visualizing how much space this is to use a tape measure and measure one of your bedrooms or perhaps space in your yard.
For instance, your bedroom measures 50 square feet. Now that should give you a visual idea of how many things you can fit in that space. Will you be able to store everything you want in that space or will you need more? You can then do the math from then to figure out how much larger the storage space should be.
You can also get a good approximation of what size storage units are best by measuring all the stuff you want to store. It isn’t very accurate but should do the trick. Though you may want to add 20% to the space just to compensate for miscalculations or last-minute additions.
That should give you a good idea of what to expect. If you have questions, our storage manager should be able to help you out too. Though you’ll need to give us as much information as possible about what you want to store and we’ll calculate accordingly.
